Memes. What they aren't, and why they show up on DBZF.

Originating from the word Mimeme[1] in Greek meaning literally, "Something imitated." Has been coined by Richard Dawkins in the book, "The selfish Gene" as a new word to describe DNA traits that are culturally similar.
Quote:

Dawkins defined the meme as a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation and replication, but later definitions would vary

The rise of the internet counter-culture, or realm of freedom of speech and expression, has given way to the later definitions. In particular the one we shall discuss is the Internet Meme[2].

They all mostly refer back to 4chan. For this discussion we will be referring to 4chan a lot. If you have to ask what that is, do yourself a favor and don't bother.

Internet Memes are not memes. They are a reference to the word meme, in that much like memes they are cultural influences of an informational nature. Most Internet Memes are intended to entice humor. This mimicry is encoded into your habits as a human. Some people go as far as to think that in order to be accepted in a crowd that they must be on the same level as the crowd. In sad cases or in most cases on the internet, people resort to Internet Memes as their fall back to become accepted. To be humorous to the crowd.
Take if you will this experiment. Heading over to 4chan's random board, occasionally there will be a link to a chat room. Entering the chat room and lurking for a period of time could get your IP address stolen, so I do not condone this. Otherwise what you will notice is how everyone in the chat room is acting. They are talking to each other in another language almost. The language is of the Internet Meme. It's as if they don't know how else to act around each other, and they end up saying the first thing that comes to mind that is a Meme. Along with a lot of other remarks that they can get away with because they are sitting behind an internet protocol. But that's besides the point.

Occasionally you'll see on this very forum a meme. Or someone saying something kind of, "off". For instance, http://dbzf.co.uk/topic/8332839/1/#new
Here is a prime example of an Internet Meme being inserted into a conversation or a thread where it really has no business. It also makes little sense.
SirParagon has said that he plans on being off for a while because of reasons. SouperSaiyan comments: Kewl Story Brah.
Note that this is a play on the Internet Meme, "Cool Story Bro[3]."
Note that the definition of the meme is:
Quote:

used as a sarcastic response to to thread posts, trolls and general comments that are deemed boring, pointless or just too long to read.

Posting, "Just Because," has become a popular theme among people who post Internet Memes. And around this forum, getting mad about not being able to spew them incessantly is also another common theme. I can't say that you'll thank us later when your in person conversation is riddled with intelligence and tact. That maybe one day when you're at an interview for a job and i'm the one interviewing you and the first thing you say when answering a question is, "I took an arrow in the knee," when answering why you've been out of work for a year, you get the job for not saying it.

Who posts Internet Memes? Certainly not people with a shred of dignity. So let's just say adolescents. They are annoying. You know they are annoying. That's why you use them. The only other way to describe yourself when posting an Internet Meme, is like a zombie. A mindless Zombie who's only purpose is to eat brains, or in this case, post Internet Memes for your humorous pleasure.

So spread the word. Other people don't need you to constantly pack Internet Memes down their throat. If it's worth a damn, they will find it themselves by seeing the latest viral video on youtube. They don't need you sharing your extensive knowledge of Courage Wolf pictures with them.

I am so sorry for this being COMPLETELY off topic, but Engineer, your signature makes me so happy. Nobody understands my love of Sriracha Rooster sauce, and the Oatmeal is one of my favorite webcomics.

Actually, I just got a book of recipes for Sriracha. I'm so excited to use it.

Back to memes.

I think that memes in moderation can be funny because they show a connection between writers and their culture, but the problem is that most people beat memes to death.

The problem isn't Memes themselves on the whole, it's the people that butcher and abuse them. Memes are usually at least somewhat funny when they're first invented, and are a part of internet culture. Unfortunately, by the time they become "public" (in other words, usually shortly after they leave 4chan), they've lost most of the humour and meaning they ever had. Most people who use Memes don't even know where or how they originated. Reddit is a good example of how people suck all the humour out of them.

I do agree with not shoving Memes down everyone's throats. People that do nothing but spout "the cake is a lie xD" and so on are insufferable. That said, some Meme's can be funny when used in the right time and place.

I agree with this. Moderation is a better policy then zealotry, I think. Hating meme's and anyone who uses them is somewhat obsessive. They're not going away any time soon. No point starting a vendetta against them. If it's not in your taste, just don't pay any attention to it.

I actually like a lot of memes. I've spent a good couple of hours just laughing at Joseph Ducreaux and Courage Wolf and I see nothing wrong with quoting them in a good context. I think what bothers people more than the actual use of memes is the failure of knowing the right context. If there's a debate about religion, some troll coming in and saying "I DID IT FOR THE lols" and posting a dozen pictures of lolcats isn't going to portray them in a good light. However, every single conversation I have isn't an "intellectual" one.

What makes me angry, though, is the zealot-like hatred of memes that quite a few people on this board seem to have. It's unnecessary. Like Psyam, I don't agree with shoving a meme down somebody's throat, but I don't agree with a religious persecution of it. You become just as bad, if not worse.

If you don't like it, ignore it. You're only feeding trolls. They'll just respond with "Haters gonna hate"

The problem is a lot of memes aren't used in context or have any context, such as the phrase "I blah blah then blah blah to the blah blah", that type of meme is stupid, more so when used in a discussion.

There was a time I did use memes and that stuff, back when I was in my teens but I grew up and out of it.

The main problem I have with memes is that people insist on repeating them over and over, if used in moderation, I ignore them.

To me, if you are going to use memes as everyday language, you are no better than the people who swear as everyday language.

As you can see, i've enticed the wrath of the troll that i've mentioned in my first post. That's the kind of issue that we have with people who excessively use memes, and why I decided to write something on it. Even if it was just for discussion. I knew he'd not be able to handle the discussion like a mature adult, and thus was banned.

My little brother pisses me off because of him just imitating memes he sees and hears on the internet. Some people are just so desperate to be funny, popular, or even just acknowledged that they'll just say the most simplistic stupid things (high school kids).

It's this kind of judgemental behaviour that I detest.

Memes are a branch of humour. Some people don't find sarcasm funny (granted, Memes are more prevalent on the internet because Sarcasm is hard to detect through text, but meh), but you don't see/hear people bashing sarcasm left and right. Why deny a branch of humour that has already made it clear it's here to stay? Regardless of whether or not YOU approve of it, people will still make Memes, and other people will find it funny.

I'll admit though, I've inserted a few memes into skits for anime conventions. They seem to be well received, but it's actually really hard to use a meme in a classy way (if possible), and I myself fail a lot before I find a decent use.

Make sure the meme actually fits the situation. The "Cool Story Bro" and "U mad?" memes are very limited in their use. All they do is make you seem like a jerk and devalue what someone else says. But maybe there's a life situation that really makes you think of a good rage comic. Or perhaps you take a funny picture of your cat jumping and photoshop a rainbow and a poptart on it! You can use them, and sometimes they can be really funny, but the big question is whether it's worth your time thinking of a good way to use a meme. Sometimes its easier AND funnier to come up with your own material.

I agree with this, as well. I was going off on moderation but also remember that ANY form of humor can be overused! I personally love surfing Know Your Meme images. :)

I think you missed my point entirely, if someone used sarcasm all the time in everyday language, that would be equally as annoying to me, so yes, I would bash it.

Using memes left and right is the problem and I don't understand why a lot of people fail to see that, that is the reason I crack down on it on this forum, I will ignore if it's not affecting discussion and in the spam section, it'll only get delt with if a whole topic degenrates into a bunch of memes, as it would if posts where just gibberish or out live the original joke.

Some memes come from questionable origins as well and some people don't get where they came from and just use them anyway.

Maybe you see my point now?

The problem is, a lot of memes don't fit into a situation and yeah, with "Cool Story Bro" and "U mad?", you're right, to me these seem obnoxious, same with the Problem? with the troll face.

Rage comics, I don't much care for, same with forever alone comics etc, but I honestly don't care if people like them and if people want to share them, fine, I know people do on IRC and I ignore it as well as the links.
